Edge Connections To Provide Boston Office Buildings With High Speed Dsl-Based Broadband Services
Underserved Small- And Mid-Sized Businneses Benefit From Low-Cost Internet Access, Voice, Video, Data And E-Commerce Sevices
Boston, MA, Aug. 2, 2000 - Edge Connections, Inc., the first full-service broadband communications provider to offer affordable and reliable Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)-based services, today announced the launch of its multi-tiered offerings in the Metropolitan Boston area. The company provides low-cost Internet access, voice, data, video and e-commerce capabilities to small- and medium-sized businesses, underserved until now, because competitors have focused on large corporations and conglomerates. Edge Connections also serves customers in New York and Atlanta, where it is headquartered, and will be expanding across the country during the next three years.
Edge Connections delivers broadband capabilities by placing DSL equipment in each multi-tenant office building, transforming that building's existing telephone wiring into a broadband network capable of running at speeds up to 6 MBPS, five times faster than a costly T1 line. The small-footprint DSL equipment is about the size of a laptop computer, and creates a broadband superhighway in the building without expensive and intrusive construction, such as re-wiring the riser with optical fiber or Ethernet cable. By leveraging the existing telephone wires, Edge Connections' rapid deployment process can make any building in the Boston area DSL ready in roughly two hours. This is a significant improvement over the weeks and month's businesses typically wait for riser construction, or for local carriers to provision high-speed lines.
"We are excited to be the first full-service, facility-based provider to deliver affordable and reliable broadband services to the thriving Boston market," said Jim McKenna, president and CEO of Edge Connections. "With over 39,000 small- and mid-sized business enterprises in the metro area, Boston represents a considerable opportunity for the deployment of broadband services."
Edge Connections VP of Marketing Ben Petro commented, "We are confident that our DSL solution will have the same overwhelming market acceptance we have seen in NY and Atlanta. Until now, small- and mid-sized businesses in the Boston market have not had a cost-effective broadband alternative. Edge Connections delivers a communications suite of high-speed Internet service, integrated voice services and e-business applications previously only targeted to Fortune 500 companies at a savings of up to 60% compared to existing alternatives."
